Importing Bulk Well Data
In addition to importing traces, checkshots, deviations and markers individually, well data can be bulk imported into Insight.
Insight will search for wells with a matching UWI in the project and update them. If no matching UWI is found, then new wells can be created from the imported well data.
Importing well data

- In the Control Panel, select the Import menu.
- Click Well Data...
- Select the file format to import.

- When selecting LAS format, choose either UWI or API as the unique identifier.

- For other formats, a warning window will appear if there are wells in the database with no UWI or with duplicate UWI.
- Clicking OK will automatically resolve issues by applying a generic fix:
- For wells in the database with no UWI: Insight will apply a generic name ‘DUG’ followed by a random alphanumeric value appended to the well name to be used as the UWI
- For wells in the database with duplicated UWI: Insight will apply a generic name DUP followed by a random alphanumeric value appended to existing UWI to be used as the new UWI
- Clicking Cancel will not apply the generic fix but will allow you to manually fix wells via Insight control panel or in the well manager tool
Note: Due to changes in well identification in Insight 4.9, all wells in Insight must have a truly unique UWI. Importing of well data is permitted if there are any well in the database with no UWI or with duplicated UWI.
- In the Import Wells window, select the file and click Open.
Importing OWX file

Note: ONLY UWI is used to match the well in the file to the well in the project for update. This applies to both OWX and ASCII files.
- In the following drop-down boxes, select Update/Skip existing wells and/or Add/Skip new wells.
- Insight will read the well data file and allow you to choose which data to import.
- Select the checkboxes under Import. If the well file does not include a particular data, the check box will be greyed out.
- Markers - Duplicate markers MUST HAVE suffix _1, _2, _3, etc... added during bulk import.
- Curves
- Checkshot
- Well Paths (from inclination/azimuth)
- Well Paths (from relative X/Y)
- In the Units and Datums section, select the units and datums for MD and TVD. You will not be able to proceed until the units have been specified.
- Under the Checkshot Settings section, define the Depth Mode and Time units. This is particularly important when transferring data between software (Insight works in ms).
- Finally, select the Offset Type relative to the previous point or to the surface location.
- Click OK.
- The Coordinate Reference System conversion window will be displayed.
- Select the Types of Coordinates and convert the CRS if required (see Converting CRS When Importing a Well).
- Click OK.
