Horizon Overview

In Insight, horizons (grids) are created and managed in the Horizon tab. However, there are important horizon related operations that are run from the Operations tab in Map View.

First, see Creating a Horizon to generate a new horizon object in Insight.

Picking your horizon

Once you have created and configured your horizon object, you can begin picking your horizon.

Insight provides a complete horizon workflow that makes picking horizons much simpler. It includes a comprehensive set of tools to allow for fast and accurate creation of horizons.

There are four ways to pick a horizon in Insight:

  • Straight Line
  • Amplitude Snapping
  • Propagator Guided
  • Propagator.

For more information on the first three, see Manual Picking. To propagate your horizon based on picked seed points, see Propagating a Horizon and How it Works (Propagator).

Note: The Propagator Guided mode assists manual picking by using the waveform propagator and user input. It will only pick on the currently displayed line. The "full" Propagator mode automatically interprets the horizon starting from seed picks provided by the user. It will interpret any "connected" (neighbouring 3D, or intersecting 2D) lines where the pick confidence is higher than the stop threshold.

Horizons can be picked in the following views:

  • IL/CL View
  • Arbline View
  • 2D View
  • 3D View
  • 2D Gather View (for 2D gathers)
  • IL/Gather/CL View (for gathers)
  • Gather View (for gathers).

Note: If you are interpreting on an interpolated location, Insight creates points on "both sides" of the location. You can tell if the line you are viewing is interpolated by looking at the navigation bar (see Navigation Bar in Views).

To pick a gather horizon, see Picking Gather Horizon via Propagator.

If you are unhappy with your horizon or a section of the horizon, see Erasing a Horizon for instructions to remove the affected parts. To make a copy an existing horizon, see Copying a Horizon.

Exploring the horizon

After your horizon is created, you can view the entire area of the horizon in Map View or 3D View. To adjust the display of the horizon, see Displaying Horizon Histograms.

A single-horizon amplitude extraction can be computed from the Details Panel of the horizon (see Horizon Display and Amplitude Extraction). For extracting amplitude between two horizons, see Horizon Amplitude Extraction. The extracted amplitude can be added as a new horizon property to be displayed in Map View. To learn more about properties of a horizon, see Horizon Properties.

Show whole or intersecting horizon in 3D view

Show whole or intersecting horizon in 3D view

In 3D View, you can view all these horizons in the surface or intersection mode by clicking Show whole or intersecting horizon in 3D at the Horizon tab header. This allows you to display all the horizons in 3D surfaces or intersecting lines on the 3D sections. You can switch between the two horizon display modes as you wish.

Undoing changes and clearing history

To undo changes and clear history, see Horizon Undo and Redo.

Horizon operations in Map View

Horizon related operations can be found in the Horizon tab in Map View (see Horizon Operations in Map View).

Importing and exporting a horizon

Besides the DUG format (.ilcl, .ilclt, .ilclz), horizons can be imported and exported in various other formats. See the following for horizon import/export formats and instructions.
